Luggage Locks

In today’s questionable political climate, it is very important that travelers are safe. In order to protect the safety of American travelers, the United States government instituted the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The TSA is responsible for all types of security in the US, but the most prominent of all of these responsibilities is airport security.

There are many new laws governing air transportation, and not all of these new laws will be discussed here. The main topic being discussed in this article will be luggage locks. Before 9/11 a person used a luggage lock without thinking about what kind it was. Now travelers have to be careful that they are purchasing TSA approved luggage locks. TSA luggage locks are those that allow the TSA access to luggage by a universal key. That way, if an official needs to search a bag, a TSA luggage lock can be opened easily. Samsonite luggage locks, for example, may have to be cut off of the bag is the bag needed to be searched and the lock was not a TSA lock.

Luggage combination locks are still used, just as they always have been. A solid brass luggage lock or 22 mm lock on luggage is still a common sight in an airport, but now the locks have a key hole at the bottom for the TSA universal access keys. Once a traveler figures out how to set combination luggage locks, there is no other problem other than remembering the combination. The traveler never has to worry about the keyhole as that is only used by the TSA officials.

Some companies sell discount luggage locks. A traveler must be careful of this offer. Even though a discount lock sounds like a good idea, these locks may not be TSA approved and therefore the lock may be cut off of the bag if that bag is searched by a TSA official. Many companies now sell search alert luggage locks. A search alert lock has a little button on it that changes color – usually from green to red – if the lock has been opened by security personnel. That way the traveler knows that their luggage was searched. Some companies make small plastic disposable luggage locks. This is beneficial is a traveler cannot spend the money on a TSA approved lock, or if the destination requires that baggage remain unlocked.
